Is high sensitivity real, or repackaged neuroticism?

Why this debate

The highly sensitive person is one of the most widely adopted self-descriptions of the past two decades. The research behind it is genuinely contested: not whether sensitive people exist, but whether sensitivity is its own trait or a repackaging of traits psychology already measures.

One side

Sensitivity as a distinct trait

Aron and Aron proposed sensory processing sensitivity as an innate trait: deeper processing of experience, awareness of subtleties, and susceptibility to overstimulation. A large multi-author review consolidated the construct within the framework of environmental sensitivity, estimating that roughly 15 to 20 percent of the population carries high levels of the trait, with supporting work spanning behaviour, physiology and genetics.

Evidence tier: a founding construct paper and a broad narrative review. The construct's measurement rests heavily on one self-report scale.

The other

Sensitivity as established traits renamed

Hellwig and Roth tested the sensitivity scale against the five-factor model at the latent level in two studies. The overload component was statistically indistinguishable from a facet of neuroticism, the aesthetic component correlated near one with openness to experience, and only the low-threshold component showed partial distinctness. Their stated conclusion: the empirical basis for sensory processing sensitivity as a new construct is currently weak.

Evidence tier: two studies with student samples under 300 each. Strong overlap finding; replication beyond student samples is limited.

What can be learned

Both sides of this debate accept your experience as real. The exhaustion, the intensity, the doubt: no paper on either side disputes that these happen. What the sides contest is the frame. Which name the experience carries, which cause it points to, and whether the thing that needs to change is you or the environment around you.

And the debate does not settle in the abstract. Decades in, it remains open because it can only resolve in the particulars of an individual case: this person, this history, this room.

If you want your own particulars laid out, that is what the map is for.
